“How do you turn a human into a vampire?” Ceridwen asked as Tamsin scribbled some notes into her tablet.

“Sorry?”

“I know there is an exchange of blood,” Ceri said, “But I also know it’s not that simple.”

“No,” Tamsin agreed, “It’s not. The human has to be drained of nearly all their blood and then ingest a great deal of vampire blood to compensate for the blood loss.”

“And if a human with minimal to no blood loss ingests a little vampire blood?”

“It can have a healing effect,” Tamsin answered, “They may experience heightened senses.”

“But that wears off?”

“Depends how much they ingest, but yes.”

Ceri stared at the whiteboard they were using to jot down ideas.

“What are you thinking?” Tamsin asked.

“The vampire virus doesn’t seem very stable, does it?”

“What do you mean?”

“A human has to ingest enough vampire blood to replace the blood they lost,” Ceri paraphrased Tamsin’s explanation. “What if the human body can fight off the virus as long as it’s strong enough?”

“So the blood loss weakens the body enough to allow the vampire virus to take over,” Tamsin considered the scenario, “It makes sense.”

“What if we could replace the vampire blood with human blood?” Ceri suggested.

“You mean try to reverse the procedure?”

“Exactly.”

Tamsin considered it, “It’s worth a try. The real trouble is draining the vampire’s blood.”

“Right,” Ceri thought, “They heal so quickly. Maybe we could draw several pints.”

They had only taken small vials when drawing Celeste’s blood, no more than five at most. “We should try taking a pint and replacing one, just to see what happens.”

“Yeah,” Ceri said, “This needs to be a slow transition. I really thought that fairy genome we had isolated was going to work.”

“It did,” Tamsin said, “Unfortunately it was just a temporary solution. But she got to see the sunrise for the first time in two centuries, Celeste was so happy.”

“I know,” Ceri smiled to herself as she thought back to seeing the vampire taking in the sunlight. “I just hoped we would be further along in our research.”

“I think you’re being too hard on yourself.”

“That is the Collins way.”

“Don’t I know it,” Tamsin said with a laugh.

“Celeste might have to actually stay here so we can observe her and keep an eye out for any permanent changes.”

“Which means someone will need to stay up and observe her those nights. Which means questions from our significant others.”

“True,” Ceri said, “Patrick is working nights next week so we could make some real progress.”

“Darcy has been helping Melanie out with some legal stuff so I might be able to help a few late nights.”

Ceri smiled, “I’ll call Celeste.”
